Most Common Issues (All Models)

• Will not start / no power: Check power cord/plug, test outlet with another tool, reset GFCI if applicable, check circuit breaker; for cordless – charge battery fully.
• Motor hums but won't turn over: Low voltage (extension cord too long/thin – use 12–10 AWG), seized pump (try hand-turning flywheel if accessible), bad start capacitor (common on 120V models), or low oil (oil-lubed only).
• Builds pressure slowly or not at all: Check for air leaks (hiss sound) at fittings, regulator, hose connections, or tank drain valve; clean/replace intake filter; worn piston rings/seals (oil-lubed models); wrong oil viscosity.
• Constantly runs / won't shut off: Air leak downstream (hose, tool, quick coupler); faulty pressure switch (stuck contacts); tank check valve leaking back to pump.
• Excessive noise / knocking: Low oil (oil-lubed), loose pulley/flywheel, worn bearings, or debris in pump; for quiet models – ensure intake muffler is clean.
• Water in air lines / tank: Drain tank daily (especially in humid climates); install water separator/filter; use desiccant dryer for spray painting.

Oil-Free Models Specific (e.g., DeWalt Pancake, Porter-Cable, California Air Tools)

• Overheating / thermal overload trips: Allow cool-down 15–30 min; ensure good ventilation; avoid long extension cords; reduce duty cycle (most oil-free are 50% or less).
• Short duty cycle / frequent cycling: Normal for small tanks (1–6 gal); larger demand tools need bigger tank or higher CFM unit.

Oil-Lubricated & Stationary Models

• Oil leaking / low oil light: Check dipstick/oil level (use non-detergent compressor oil 30W or synthetic); tighten fittings; replace gaskets if leaking from head.
• Pressure relief valve popping: Faulty pressure switch (set too high), regulator issue, or restricted discharge line; do NOT plug or silence valve – replace defective part.

Portable Gas-Powered & High-Pressure Models

• Engine won't start: Check fuel, spark plug, choke, air filter; fresh gas (ethanol-free recommended); pull cord firmly.
• Viair / 12V compressors overheating: Duty cycle usually 30–50%; allow cool-down; check wiring gauge and connections for voltage drop.

Safety note: Always release tank pressure before storage or maintenance. Wear eye/ear protection. Do not exceed rated PSI. Never use near flammable materials. Drain tank regularly to prevent rust/corrosion. Unplug/disconnect power before servicing. Keep children/pets away during operation.
